LEADERSHIP AND MANAGERIAL EFFECTIVENESS...

dont worry i am going to give another gyaan on this much talked about topic...this is a course i took this term to reduce my load enabling me to concentrate on my core subjects and lo! GOD in his infinite sense of fairness has given us an instructor who makes us actually work and do assignments ourselves!! my poor friend who had recommended the course saying "le lo achcha time pass rahega" gets an earful in every class....

well not to digress from the point, this the first HR subject i have voluntarily taken, that too facilitated by MS Asha Bhandarkar, who fame exceeds only her popularity..most of the PGPM ( the regular course) view HR subjects skeptically, thinking it to be mostly faff(remember, its just a view, not truth!!), a belief which has been reinforced due to the "item" profs we got every term....since this course deals with ME and not my organization, i was prepared to approach it with open mind....

last class we had the DIRECTED DAY DREAMING exercise....we were asked to lie down and with our eyes closed, lights switched off, we had to imagine ourselves in a meadow...exploring it....after a few minutes we had to draw all that we saw....then we lay down again and imagined a house in the meadow which we explored inside out....then we opened the door and some creatures came out and we spoke to them about their problems.....then we helped them all bak in the house...and in the end we met a wise old person...well we had to draw all this in stages...after which mam discussed the analysis with us.....

AND u wont believe it....the house was supposed to be our personality!! and the creatures sub groups of our personality!! well it was pretty hard to digest that if i saw a dog, it meant i was loyal, if i saw a cow, it showed my patience, a solid house meant a strong personality, windows in the house reflected my openness etc etc....pretty difficult to accept that i can draw conclusions about my personality from some random imaginings....and this r..esistance is what mam faced in class today.....and unfortunately for us, she was not able to handle the situation gracely...one query was, quite practically, that we would generally imagine a creature we were either thinking about or had seen in the morning, so does it really reflect the true picture? secondly, every thing can be interpreted in a number of ways for eg dog is thought to be loyal in indian context while some catholics believe it to be a symbol of Satan...even mam agreed that it has a cultural context...so how do i interpret it if i have a multicolored background....thirdly, every thing has a personal context...meaning that every individual has her own unique view of looking at things...for eg i hate dogs while u might love them...so when i imagine dogs that wud be in a negative sense while u wud be doing just the opposite!!!

the presence of the personal context destroys the whole credibility of the exercise...since i can interpret it in any way i desire...whats the sanctity of the exercise, for most of the class it had lost its credibility....i have seen this problem in most of the HR concepts taught to us...maybe not being my core subject, i am not sufficiently qualified to judge it but in trying to relate it to my work experience, i have felt that there is a large gap between theory and reality....and this produces a disconnect with a subject....y aren't we taught wat is practical...after all MBA is all about "doing" things not just " learning" concepts!! this view is shared by most of our class....

i think that a mass overhaul of the curriculum and teaching is required...MBA is not just about getting a degree for a job ( the approach ppl adopt to an engg degree), it is an investment in our future, and most of us have invested our hard earned money in it or taken loans which wud claim a good chunk of our paychecks for the next decade....so, in effect we are consumers paying for a service and its high time we demanded quality, not some arbit case studies and assignments handed out in the name of "academic rigor"...

till then just remember "All work and no play will make you a manager"....Cheers!!!

Ya they are biased as they present my views as a student...but i have simply talked about the subject and dont think that i have written anything which would hurt feelings and emotions of my classmates....
