GURU - THE MOVIE AND BEYOND.......

A great new development in gurgaon is the opening of PVR in Sahara Mall....and there are tickets priced at Rs 50 for the morning show! Verma being the intelligent movie buff he is, got us tickets for Guru for the Saturday morning show. The movie is pretty well made and entertaining. Although there are a lot of denials the movie does bear a "strong resemblance" to Dhirubhai Ambani's life.

For a detailed comparison, you can read the linked stories. However the movie has been able to bring out the sense of ambition in the man and how the disadvantage of ur circumstances can be more than compensated by ur grit. No excuse can stand in your path if u r really determined to have something....a high degree of internality is reqd....it eliminates all the external dependencies.....it was really inspiring if u care to look at it and remember that the story has been real somewhere...sometime...and is not limited to a movie....People are saying that the Ash-Bachchan chemistry has come out here...i did not feel it if such a chemistry did in fact exist. I also do not think they played convincing gujjus! Yaar gujju hona har kisi ke bas ki baat nahi!!

That said the movie raised some effective questions but failed to answer them at the end...well i did not expect any answers because i did not think there were any but i wud have loved to seen some sort of handling of the question....(Similarly we saw a very inadequate handling of a very pertinently raised question in KANK..) .....who was actually right and to what extent...guru kant desai the unfortunately common born man who wants to make it big in India's License Raj and believes that u have to play the unfair game with unfair rules ...who brings wealth to the common man while spreading a lot of worms in the corporate world....or shyam saxena who believes that ur principles should be impeachable, and the ends do not justify the means....

We face this question almost everyday in our lives....its always a question of how we define ethics...Is taking personal print outs in office ethical.....using the office phone for 'harmless' personal calls....giving false bills for 'entitled' reimbursements....giving false medical certificates for the medical tax exemption....selling company secrets to the enemy.

We do not realise it but i feel that it is our attitude to the small things which decide what we will do when faced with the big ones....i have written about cheating earlier...that is an ethical dilemma which i am unable to resolve! In the relative grading system, difference in marks matters a lot since there is no cut off pass marks....so i if i dont cheat and the others do, i lose out in a big big way.....but i cannot cheat according to my principles...so what do i do??? maybe i can give up on 'moh maya' and become one of the students who have come here only for 'learning' and they dont give a hoot for marks....they can fail for all they care...may be i can forget everything and play the game with the current rules...... but the problem is when i want to win the rat race without compromising on what i feel are my ethics...my friends tell me that it is impossible to do so and today we need to redefine what we mean by ethics....so is cheating in quiz allowed while not in terms? its not that i am a gandhian...i do copy assignments....is that not cheating??? it can be said that i am not qualified to take a holy stand....

the point is that i am not trying to take a holy stand....i only want to be comfortable with my conscience and be able to face myself in the mirror (yeh baat alag hai ki i dont look into it!)......and i would love to know and understand how ppl define ethics and principles in todays context....because i am very much a part of the rat race and i want to win it....but on my own terms.....
P.S.... What was Vidya Balan doing in the movie!!! A gross waste of huge talent!!
