Recently i saw the movie "Arth".....I had been looking for its cd for a long time and luckily i got it in landmark after many futile attempts.....Everybody in the movie has performed very well and the emotions have been brought out with subtlety.....A lot of questions are raised which leave you thinking...some have been answered (although you may not agree with them) while most have been left open......Shabana Azmi is an orphan for whom the safety and security of a husband (Khulbhushan Kharbanda) and home mean everything.....However, he falls in love with a neurotic actress (Smita Patil) and their marriage breaks up....Azmi is very dependent on her husband and is initially unable to cope with the implications.....desperate and egoless, she even goes and begs Patil to leave her husband.....however once she realises that her marriage is over, she takes charge of her life and moves on....looking for and finding the "arth" of her life.....
Leaves you thinking about relationships.....You have to work on maintaining relationships where u r not bound by blood.....and a fragile thing and break so easily and so irreparably.....the movie did not focus on why he had the affair with another woman....it was not important for the movie....but it left me wondering....a relationship which is spsd to be more important than ur parents, sibling, whole family.....what is the meaning of life if u cannot implicitly trust the basis of that relationship.....i will never leave my family but i cannot stay with them....i have stay with a husband who can choose to walk out whenever he pleases!! i know i have put it rather crudely but the balance in a marriage seems scary....nurturing a relationship is fine but there shud be space to be ur worse self secure in the knowledge that ur partner will love u for better or worse....but what if that security is not there? where do we go from this? do i keep being someone i am not so that i am liked and loved or do i take a leap of faith......
Pooja (Shabana Azmi) is told in the movie......Pooja khud mein poori hai, use poora hone ke liye kisi ke naam ki zaroorat nahi....tumhe apne jeene ka arth khud dhoondhna hai very true...indian society has always seen a woman as a daughter, sister, mother, wife....and its high time she has her own identity....the feminist i am, i always have a tuf time explaining to MCPs the need of my own identity....being known and identified for what i have done and for what i am.....but the eternal question.....what is the meaning of existence....it is generally acknowledged that career, money, fame etc are not the purpose of life, it is more important to focus on ur family, ur kids and husband shud come before ur job....etc etc....but what did she get in return of believing this???? The heroine had loved her husband with her whole being yet the marriage breaks up horribly and she wud have dealt better with it if she had a life on her own....i agree that family is important but women in India generally happily bury their identities themselves and start living according to others....it may be called 'love', 'adjustment', 'compromise'...whatever u call it, the fact remains that she has no life outside her family......what is the meaning of life in case the whole setup crumbles.....there shud be some amount of soul searching and introspection to replace the blind belief that u shud give up everything for ur family.....
yes it is true that we need to understand what life is all about and make our own sense of the world.....i believe that marriage and family maybe the answer but u shud reach the conclusion after making ur own journey, then only u can have real belief in the premise....blindly accepting it will shake the foundation some day....and then suddenly u feel that there is nothing worth living for.....
The story escapes an important question by making the other woman a neurotic character who backs out of marrying her boyfriend at the last moment....what if she had been a normal woman and they were really happy together.....is it really true that an extra marital affair can not be happy?? what if they find real happiness....is it still wrong?? even KANK escaped this question by separating and punishing rani and shahrukh before reuniting them...i believe that an extra marital affair can happen only if there is something missing in the relationship (which can be latent)....ur partner maybe just ur friend and the missing spark wud become obvious only when a person enters who can ignite that spark.....what do u do then......u keep on with ur partner(who is more of a friend than a husband) because u met him first and married him....or is it better to part ways? i know on the surface it can be said ki aise to har doosre din koi aisa milega jo tumhe aur achcha lagega to kitni baar shadi karogi.....but what about the case when u r happy with ur husband but the spark had never been there....and u had never realised its absence coz u did not know what it meant then......and then somebody comes.........
Makes me wonder about marriage....yes the sacred institution is highly over rated.....but at the end of the day, the fact remains that u cannot return to an empty house all ur life.....even if u come home and fight....at least there is somebody who knows (and maybe cares) whthr u r alive or dead.....
