no its not about time travel...just a book i read recently....and i felt i must write about it in my blog.....it is one of the worst written books i have ever read.....yes u got it right! i cud finish the book only because i generally dont leave books half read....and read it till the end giving the author a chance to redeem his name till the last page....unsucessfully this author did the opposite right till the end...which is sad considering that he is indian and reading good english books (i.e. written originally in english) by indians is a real pleasure!
So what got me so against the book that i actually put it on my blog....i was not even going to buy it but the book seller where i generally get my books insisted it was a great book and since he was the second person to recomment it to me i succumbed....i generally dont like to negatively criticize a book coz i can only begin to understand how much effort, discipline and dedication it takes on the part of the author to entertain us for just 3 hours..
The book is pure masala....as every person in india knows, masala right amount mein hi achcha lagta hai, zyada hone se it spoils the whole taste and tastes only of masala, masala, masala.....that is what happened in the book...instead of having one main plot and other side stories weaving off the main theme, it seemed a mass of hindi movie stories!! and then the metaphors.....at least three cliched metaphors in every paragraph!!! the story in itself was highly unrealistic (while the author tried to give a tone of realism to the whole thing!) and while the main thread was digestible (guy in call centre, girl in US, talk on phone and fall in love), the additives made it impossible to swallow....the height being when the hero joins a gang of imposters (who make fake visas) in a fake chess team to go to the US to woo his lady.....and then he asks a policeman for the girl's address who incidently, is also in love with the same girl and hence gets the hero deported to eliminate competition!!!.....another problem was the anachronistic jumble of the various sub plots....the hero's mother dreams of being an enthrepreneur and enjoying the 'nakhras of being the groom's mom in traditional india' at the same time....
oh yes i forgot the height of the masala...the girl who had been projected as the ideal indian bahu and patni turns out to be a lesbian who runs away with her lover to marry....and she plans to legalise it as indian law punishes sex with a person of same sex but does not mention anything about same sex marriages!!!!
all in all if u r in a cribby mood and wud like to take it all out on someone, then this book is the way to go....a must read for everyone to benchmark the levels of overcreativity.....
